A Chance to Brag about our School

Grade 1/2 Problem Solving

Lomond Community School…… a small school but with GREAT educational opportunities.  I love bragging about our school.  Here are some recent brags we need to share.

I often hear people talking about students in desks all day and working on worksheets.  They then comment on how this really isn’t for their child.  But really this isn’t the way school is — there is definitely a place for desks and worksheets.  There is an important place for writing and answering questions.  But there is also a place for hands-on learning and engaging activities.  Here are some great examples of students engaging – this is the learning students want to talk about.

- After studying how bylaws are created, grade 5/6 created new bylaws and practiced passing them.

- Students in grade 11 created a country and competed in a National Olympics competition.  The games in this event represented their culture.  Through this they also examined the role of nationalism and factors influencing nationalism.

- The grade 1/2 class practiced problem solving through different hands-on activities.  They later discussed if problem solving was easier collaboratively or individually.

- Students in grade 9 entered the local cardboard boat races where they had to design, build and then test their boat.

- Grade 5/6 practiced working with ratios as they mixed and tested gatorade with water.

- Students in grade 3/4 learned about sound, sound waves and how to amplify sound.

You are always welcome to come in and see our school in action.  We work hard to engage and empower all students.
