The Village of Lomond was established in 1914 when Canadian
Pacific
extended the steel from the Suffield branch. The Village was
named
after the famous "Loch Lomond" in Dumbartonshire, Scotland. The
Village
is located 30 miles east of Vulcan on Highway 531. It is
connected
with Highway 845 which goes south to Coaldale and Lethbridge and north
connecting to Highway 539 to Bow City and Brooks.
The Village is made up of a grocery store, hardware store, post
office, bank, 2 restaurants, both Agricore and Pioneer elevators were
closed
in Dec. of 2000 and the Pioneer was torn down in the spring of 2001,
community
library, hotel and bar, fertilizer store, community centre (which
houses
skating and curling in the winter, dance floor, kitchen and dining
room),
welding business, car wash, volunteer fire department, school,
and
a seniors Drop-In Centre. It also has a tennis court, 2 baseball
diamonds, two small playgrounds, and a camp kitchen with camping
area.
The School has a big playground, track and infield soccer/football
area,
and a ball diamond.
The population of the Lomond district is about 600. The
village itself has about 200 people and the surrounding area makes up
the
difference. The area surrounding the Village of Lomond is made up
of large tracts of agricultural land. It is made up of dryland,
irrigation
and grazing land. The rural area extends approximately from the
Lake
McGregor Reservoir on the west to the Bow River on the east and from
the
Department of Lands and Forests' Community Pasture on the north to the
M.D. of Taber on the south. The Lomond district encompasses about
500 square miles and is made up of what were once the smaller centres
of
Wheat Centre, Badger Lake, Travers and Armada.
There are several recreational facilities in the area surrounding
Lomond. To the west eight miles, Lake McGregor provides a large
boating
and fishing area with room for campers. To the east eight miles
Badger
Lake has been stocked with trout and a boat ramp and a camping area is
provided. South of Lomond 10 miles is the Little Bow Reservoir
and
provides boating, fishing and camping. West of Little Bow
Reservoir
is the Travers Dam with camping facilities, very good fishing and
boating.
The Lomond district is located in the heart of the countryside
and the people and facilities here offer good old-fashioned country
hospitality.
